Three Area Players Advance at Open

Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport of Palos Verdes was among three South Bay players who won second-round matches in the girls’ division Wednesday at the U.S. Open in New York City.
Davenport, who reached the second round of the main draw, defeated Karin Miller of Trenton, N.J., 6-3, 6-1. Nicole London of Rolling Hills Estates, seeded 11th, ousted Vanessa Webb of Canada, 6-0, 6-1, and Janet Lee of Rancho Palos Verdes upset 10th-seeded Yuka Yoshida of Japan, 6-1, 6-2.
Lee was also a winner in doubles, teaming with Sandy Sureephong of Haines City, Fla. for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, victory over Dawn Buth of Wichita, Kan., and Diana Spadea of Boca Raton, Fla.
Amanda Basica of Lomita was a first-round loser to second-seeded Rosana De Los Rios of Paraguay, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, on Monday.
