University City 49, Hoover 0--Paul Turner and Ed Miller each scored two touchdowns, and quarterback Daranzol Sheppard passed for two scores and ran for another as the Centurions routed visiting Hoover.
It was the most points scored by University City and its first shutout since 1986.
Turner scored on a four-yard run and a 62-yard pass from Sheppard. Miller’s touchdowns runs came from 19 and four yards. Sheppard had a six-yard scoring run and an 11-yard scoring pass to Greg Russell.
Flintridge Prep 28, La Jolla Country Day 8--Ben Moran scored touchdowns three ways--on a three-yard run, a 12-yard pass from John Vance and an eight-yard fumble recovery--to help Flintridge spoil Country Day’s season opener.
Senior fullback Mark Smith gained 111 yards on 15 carries for the Torres, who watched their comeback hopes vanish when quarterback Billy Nieswender sustained a separated shoulder during the third quarter. LJCD, trailing 14-8 at the time, had driven inside the Flintridge 15 when Nieswender was hurt. A turnover ended the drive.
“(The injury) couldn’t have come at a worse time,” LJCD Coach Rick Woods said. “We only have one returning starter from last year, so it was the first time under fire for most of our players. Some had great games.”
