SPORTSCOPE : No. 1 Toros Play Host to Aztecs Saturday

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s soccer team will play host to NCAA Division I opponent San Diego State at noon Saturday.
The Aztecs, who are not ranked, and Toros played to a 1-1 tie last season in San Diego.
Dominguez Hills, the top-ranked team in Division II, opened California Collegiate Athletic Assn. play Wednesday with a 6-0 victory over Chapman.
The Toros have been led by junior forward Teresa Bateman, a transfer from El Camino College, who has four goals and 10 points. She has scored two goals in two consecutive matches.
Junior midfielder Jennifer Womack has nine points.
Dominguez Hills will travel to Cal State San Bernardino for a CCAA match at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

After finishing sixth among 12 teams in the UC Santa Barbara tournament last week, the Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will play host to 15th-ranked Santa Barbara (3-1) in a nonconference match at 7 tonight at Gersten Pavilion.
Loyola (6-3) defeated Morehead State of Kentucky, and Santa Clara and lost to San Jose State and Montana in the Santa Barbara tournament.
The Lions will meet 11th-ranked USC (3-1) in a nonconference match at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at USC’s North Gym.
The Lions have been led by junior outside hitter Deanna Doolittle, who became only the second Loyola player to surpass 1,000 career kills during the Santa Barbara tournament. She has 1,017 kills and is third on the career list in digs with 1,108.

After its 3-1 overtime victory Wednesday against Chapman College in its California Collegiate Athletic Assn. opener, the Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team will travel to Cal State Bakersfield for a 5 p.m. match Saturday.
Dominguez Hills (3-3) has won three consecutive games. Bakersfield is a perennial Division II power that is 3-2-1 and 1-0 in the CCAA.
The Dominguez Hills scoring leader is senior forward Gerardo Yepez with five points.

The Loyola Marymount men’s soccer team will travel to Cal State Los Angeles tonight for a match at 7.
The Lions (1-2-2) tied Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 1-1, on Wednesday. Loyola, which has gone to overtime in four of its past five matches, also tied Biola on Monday.
The Lions will open West Coast Conference play against 17th-ranked San Francisco at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Loyola. They will play host to La Verne in a nonconference match at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s volleyball team plays host to the eight-team Toro invitational tournament today and Saturday.
The Toros (1-9), who lost to Cal Baptist on Tuesday, will compete in a four-team pool along with Chapman, Cal State Hayward and Cal State Stanislaus. The other teams competing are Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State San Bernardino and Sonoma State.
Chapman, ranked 15th in Division II, is the tournament’s defending champion. Matches begin today at 9 a.m.

The Loyola Marymount water polo team will compete in the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Corona del Mar High.
The Lions will play four matches in the tournament. On Saturday, they will meet UC San Diego at noon and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 5 p.m. On Sunday the Lions play Fresno State at 12:20 p.m. and UC Riverside at 6:10 p.m.

Registration is under way for the 1992 Rancho Palos Verdes/Marathom’s cross-country team, open to youths age 8 to 15.
The team will begin practicing Monday at Palos Verdes Intermediate School.
The cost is $124 for Rancho Palos Verdes residents and $129 for non-residents and includes a T-shirt.
Practices will be Monday through Thursday at the school. The team is coached by Barry Sacks of Peninsula High.

Actors Christian Slater, Richard Grieco, Jerry Van Dyke and Gil Gerard are among the scheduled participants in the eighth annual Celebrity Tennis Classic at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Manhattan Country Club in Manhattan Beach.
Round-robin matches begin at 9:30 and exhibition matches are scheduled for 11. The semifinals and finals are scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. and a cocktail reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m.
Proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants special wishes to children with terminal and life-threatening illnesses.

El Camino will hold its 1992 Run, Walk and Roll 5-K for all ages at 8 a.m. Sept. 27 at the college in Torrance.
The 5-K wheelchair race will start at 8 and the 5-K walk and run starts at 8:20.
The cost is $15 and includes a T-shirt.
There will also be a fitness expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the college.
