As expected, Gehlke is having little trouble moving up from high school to community college volleyball. Gehlke was an All-Southern Section pick at Mater Dei last year and has been impressive for Golden West, the two-time defending State champion.
Gehlke had 14 kills as Golden West swept Cuesta, 15-10, 15-10, 15-8, then came back with 20 kills as the Rustlers swept Grossmont, 15-2, 15-8, 15-9. Golden West, Cuesta and Grossmont have combined to win the last eight State titles.
Other top performers:
Saddleback’s Sonja Hildebrand, who won the Orange Empire Conference cross-county race at Irvine Regional Park in 19:32. It was her second consecutive victory this season.
Irvine Valley’s Nancy Hunsaker, who finished second at the Orange Empire cross-county meet and helped the Lasers win the team title.
Danielle Straub, who scored four goals and had an assist in four matches for the Cypress women’s soccer team, which won three of the four.
