Schutt Leads Aztecs Past UC Riverside

San Diego State’s Gracie Schutt had one less kill than UC Riverside did as a team as the Aztecs’ women’s volleyball team overran the Highlanders, 15-4, 15-11, 15-5, in a nonconference match at UCR (1-9) Tuesday night.
Schutt, a senior outside hitter, had 23 kills to UCR’s 24. Also for SDSU (11-2), Kori Ermigarat and Jennifer Miller had eight kills apiece. The Aztecs have won nine matches in a row.
Point Loma Nazarene, which moved up to No. 5 in NAIA District 3 rankings this week, easily defeated Claremont College, 15-5, 15-8, 15-11 in a nonconference match at PLNC.
Roberta Smith, Kacy Oakley and Robin Rabello had 11 kills each for the Crusaders (6-3). Teammate Debbie Litten had 53 assists. Claremont College dropped to 7-5.
CSU Northridge snapped University of San Diego’s four-game winning streak with a 15-10, 15-9, 13-15, 15-13 nonconference victory at CSUN (9-4). Jennifer Lofftus, Amy McMahon and Jennifer Wrightson each came up with 10 kills for USD (7-5). Northridge’s Nancy Nicholls, with 15, was the kill leader for the match.

Rodrigo Da Matta scored twice for Point Loma Nazarene as the host Crusaders turned back Christian Heritage, 2-0. Both of Da Matta’s goals came in the second half. He scored 27 minutes into the period off an assist by Eric Wooten, then struck again eight minutes later off a pass by Steve Beck.
PLNC (2-1) took 31 shots on goal to four by Christian Heritage (0-5). Goalkeeper David Borsh blocked 29 of those shots. For PLNC, Jason Breum recorded the shutout.
