PREP ROUNDUP : Corona del Mar Girls Beat Irvine in Cross-Country

Corona del Mar, ranked third in Orange County, defeated No. 2 Irvine, 25-33, in a Sea View League girls’ cross-country opener Thursday at Irvine High School.

With 600 yards left, three Corona del Mar runners leading the race, Dresden Howell, Brooke Meek and Tracy Clark, went off course. Clark, a sophomore, recovered in time to take second place to Irvine’s Kelly Roda, who finished the three-mile course in 18 minutes 2 seconds.

“They kept their composure and regrouped, getting back into the race, but it was a very hard thing to do,” Corona del Mar Coach Bill Sumner said.

Clark ran 18:20 while Meek, who was fourth, finished in 18:26. Irvine’s Jennifer Gillis was third (18:25).

In Sea View League girls’ tennis:

Irvine 9, Woodbridge 9 (76-76 on games, Irvine wins on tiebreaker, 10-8)--Sophomore Alessandra Schinaia swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, then came back in the tiebreaker with the score, 9-8, and defeated Woodbridge’s No. 3 singles player, 7-3, to clinch the victory for Irvine (5-2, 3-0 in league).

In Sea View League girls’ volleyball:

Newport Harbor 3, Santa Margarita 1--Sophomore Misty May led the Sailors with 19 kills and three blocks. Newport Harbor is 3-1, 2-1.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Laguna Beach 3, Capistrano Valley 1--Rachel Wacholder had 30 kills and Hillary Kyle had 17 for the Artists (3-0), the No. 2-ranked team in Orange County, who won, 15-8, 15-12, 10-15, 15-6.

La Habra 3, Cypress 1--With Heather Lowe sidelined with a sprained ankle, Cypress’ Julie Adams had eight kills but La Habra won, 15-12, 15-13, 10-15, 15-3. Cypress is 3-1. Lowe, who sprained the ankle Wednesday, will be out a couple of weeks, Cypress Coach Jerry Gregg said.

In the South Coast water polo tournament:

Costa Mesa 9, Long Beach Wilson 8--Costa Mesa (5-2), ranked third in the Southern Section Division III, upset Wilson, ranked third in Division I, by outscoring Wilson, 2-0, in the fourth quarter. Sam Grayeli scored the winning goal with 1:10 remaining after Costa Mesa goalkeeper Chris Avitia blocked a Wilson six-on-five shot. J.R. Porter, who scored a team-high five goals, tied the score with a goal with four minutes left. Grayeli scored eight goals in an 18-0 first-round victory over University.

Corona del Mar 6, Poway 5--Brian Codori scored with nine seconds left in the match to give the Sea Kings the second-round victory. Corona del Mar (3-2) beat Buena Park, 18-5, in the first round.
