Cardinal Mahony

It is interesting to note that Cardinal Roger Mahony has written an unprecedented letter to the entertainment industry about family values (Oct. 1). In my opinion, the cardinal should do something else unprecedented and expand family values for those over whom he has considerable influence to include family planning and an emphasis on education. It should be apparent to the cardinal that one of California’s most serious problems is how to provide a quality education to all its youth, and there are few institutions outside the family with the influence of the church and its leaders. Separation of church and state aside, there has to be some close cooperation in the near future or the schools, public or private, are going to be faced with an insurmountable task.
