North Carolina Senator to Undergo Heart Surgery

DURHAM, N.C. — Sen. Terry Sanford (D-N.C.) announced Thursday that he will undergo heart surgery today but will still seek reelection. Sanford, 75, who is running for a second term, had a bacterial infection of a heart valve this summer and was treated with antibiotics. But the infection persisted and the heart valve must be replaced.
