Rickey Henderson reached base in 21 consecutive postseason games before David Cone retired him four consecutive times. . . . The game ended Oakland’s seven-game winning streak and Toronto’s four-game losing streak in league championship series play. . . . Eight stolen bases in one game tied an AL championship series record for two teams. Oakland and Toronto also combined for eight steals in 1989. . . . After two games in 1989, Henderson already had six steals. In this series, he has yet to get past first base. . . . Blue Jay third baseman Kelly Gruber and CBS-TV commentator Jim Kaat both came down with laryngitis. Kaat could not speak by the ninth inning and was replaced by Johnny Bench, who said: “It’s not the first time that I’ve pinch-hit.” . . . Tom Henke got his first save in postseason play. Of his 12 pitches, 10 were strikes.
