Ivan Alvarez, 22, one of three Cuban baseball players who came to Mexico to play in a tournament and defected, said he made the move because of politics.
Alvarez, a pitcher for Cuba’s Industrials club, told Reuters that he and his two teammates have not sought political asylum in Mexico because they hope to go to the United States to play, Alvarez said.
Alvarez said first baseman Osmany Estrada and left fielder Alexis Cabreja defected and fled to Los Angeles.
