LAGUNA BEACH — Binh Tran rushed for 333 yards and three touchdowns, leading Costa Mesa to a 65-19 rout of Laguna Beach in a Pacific Coast League game Friday at Laguna Beach High.
The rushing total moved Tran into fifth place on Orange County’s all-time single-game list and made him the only player to have two of the top-10 performances. Tran, a 5-foot-7, 170-pound junior, gained 311 yards against Calvary Chapel last week, then the county’s eighth-best performance.
Tran opened with a 56-yard touchdown run on Costa Mesa’s first possession with 9 minutes 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter, giving Costa Mesa (3-3, 1-0) a 7-0 lead.
Later, he added touchdown runs of two and four yards. Josh Peca was Costa Mesa’s second-leading rusher with 78 yards in nine carries and three touchdowns.
Laguna Beach (1-5, 0-1) came within eight, 21-13, when quarterback Paul Wood, who threw for 302 yards but with seven interceptions, hit wide receiver Luke Matjas from the 11 with 1:01 left in the first half.
The second half turned into a touchdown rally for Costa Mesa (3-3, 1-0), as it scored six touchdowns.
