Nine candidates are vying for four seats on the Board of Trustees of the North Orange County Community College District in the Nov. 3 election.

AREA 1

Anaheim; two seats available

Stephen W. Bristol

Age: 41.

Occupation: Area correspondent manager.

Background: Anaheim Community Redevelopment commissioner; Anaheim Planning Commission; member of the Anaheim charter review.

Priorities: Raise revenue through partnership with business and city and community leaders; pursue building facilities in Yorba Linda and downtown Anaheim; seek solutions to the increased number of students who aren’t able to get the classes they need.

Cynthia P. Coad

Age: 58.

Occupation: Businesswoman; educator.

Background: Doctorate in education; chairwoman of Independencia Community Center in Anaheim; member of the Adopt-a-Block graffiti paint-out; member of the Protocol Foundation; recipient of Freedom Foundation George Washington Medal of Honor for Educational Creativity.

Priorities: Work to bring about fiscal responsibility; improve career ladders for teachers; provide increased access to education for students.

Leonard L. Lahtinen

Age: 58.

Occupation: Incumbent; high school teacher.

Background: Elected to the board in 1990, currently serves as president; foreman pro tem of the Orange County Grand Jury, 1985-86; president of Anaheim Secondary Teachers Assn.; member of Orange County Transportation Authority citizens advisory committee.

Priorities: Allocate limited budget to meet students’ needs; address proper maintenance of campuses; continue planning and development of Yorba Linda property.

Steve White

Age: 45.

Occupation: Businessman.

Background: Former trustee, served from 1988-1990; vice chairman of the Anaheim Community Redevelopment Commission; member of Los Amigos, a Hispanic business and cultural organization; secretary of Anaheim HOME, a politically active homeowners organization.

Priorities: Pursue facility development in Yorba Linda and downtown Anaheim; secure additional funding through training partnerships with businesses; develop a long-range financial plan.

Yorba Linda; one seat available

Barbara G. Hammerman

Age: 44.

Occupation: Manager of Grove Shakespeare Festival.

Background: Elected to the board in 1983; member Orange County Community College Legislative Task Force; state chairwoman of National Assn. of Community College Trustees.

Priorities: Lobby for state funding and other legislative assistance for community colleges; prepare students for quality jobs; provide a source of training and retraining for local businesses.

Lyndon Taylor

Age: 57.

Occupation: Businessman; community college planner.

Background: 25 years of administrative service in the district; national speaker on the future of community colleges; member of Orange County Labor Market Consortium.

Priorities: Institute system of long-range planning; develop educational facilities in Yorba Linda and Anaheim; pursue sound fiscal policies and alternative financial sources.

Lowell Thomas

Age: 55.

Occupation: Retired management consultant.

Background: Member of the Rotary Club; volunteer in fine arts department at Fullerton College; violinist with Fullerton Symphony.

Priorities: Attract community support and financing, continuing to develop the Yorba Linda campus to provide more credit courses; work with community to set educational priorities that meet the needs of area businesses.

Fullerton; one seat available

Stephen T. Barber

Age: 38.

Occupation: Commercial photographer; writer.

Background: Former board member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Fullerton; former board member of Church of the Brethren in Santa Ana; attended Fullerton College part time for six years.

Priorities: Reduce management positions by one-third; form a team of instructors, management and classified personnel to advise the district board; spend time on campus talking to instructors, management, classified personnel and students.

Chris Loumakis

Age: 39.

Occupation: Incumbent; business executive.

Background: Member of board of trustees in 1983; former executive director of Orange County Assn. for Retarded Citizens; former chief of staff for former county Supervisor Edison Miller; director of advisory committee for the Child and Family Safety Committee in Anaheim.

Priorities: Expand vocational education programs; add new campus that provides a credit curriculum in Yorba Linda; seek a permanent adult education site in Anaheim; promote smart fiscal, educational and personnel policies.
