La Puente : City to Buy GTE Building
Plans to convert the vacant GTE building in the 16000 Block of Main Street into a senior citizens center went a step further Tuesday when the city council voted 4 to 1 to buy the property for $522,000.
The 10,500-square-foot building, which will be renovated, sits on a 30,000-square-foot lot.
Councilman Charles H. Storing opposed the measure, saying he was not satisfied with an asbestos study prepared by consultants.
The council hired the architectural firm of John Bates Associates to oversee the renovation and appointed a five-member senior citizens advisory panel to offer guidance on the project.
