SANTA CLARITA : Condom Shop Opens After Delay

The Safe Sex Shop, which sells condoms to drive-in customers at a converted Fotomat booth, opened this week in Santa Clarita.
Established by a local attorney and an auto-body shop proprietor who said they want to help combat AIDS, the shop’s opening had been delayed several weeks by vandalism. The booth’s window had been broken and its signs marred by spray paint.
A week ago, the enterprise was condemned by City Councilwoman Jan Heidt, who suggested at a council meeting that customers be videotaped to discourage such a business.
“Let’s face it, this is a pretty conservative community,” Heidt said Monday. “You’d expect to find this sort of thing happening in Hollywood, but not out here.”
The proposal went nowhere. But ironically, the first customer--Jimmy Miller, 17, a senior at Hart High School in Santa Clarita-- was videotaped by TV news cameras when he showed up shortly after the booth opened. Miller, unperturbed by the presence of reporters, said the shop is a good idea.
