Officials said Wednesday they will spend $844,000 to hire armed guards to battle graffiti, trespassing and racing along the new I-105 Freeway and the Metro Green Line, which are still under construction.
The Rail Construction Corp., the builder of the Metro Line system, and Caltrans have hired 24-hour patrols and on-site armed guards to protect the route from Norwalk to El Segundo.
Sheriff’s Department Transit Bureau Capt. Frank Badurro said anyone unlawfully entering the construction site might be arrested. Rail Construction Corp. officials said they will ask that convicted graffiti vandals be subject to a one-year suspension or delay of drivers’ license privileges.
Los Angeles Transportation Commission spokeswoman Roberta Tinajero said the extra security is needed because trespassers, graffiti vandals and auto racers have flocked to the unopened freeway.
“It provides a dangerous situation because it’s still a construction site,” Tinajero said. “It has lots of sharp objects on the ground.”
