Alex Ullmann; Winner of First Fiction Award

Alex Ullmann, 34, whose novel “Afghanistan” won the 1992 Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Ullmann also was one of the original editors at Elle magazine and worked as a translator from French to English. His fiction appeared in Grand Street, Shenandoah and GQ. In New York City on Nov. 6 of leukemia.
