COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Bruin Kick Coverage Not So Special

UCLA’s special teams have been ordinary this season.

After not allowing a punt return for a touchdown since 1986, UCLA has given up two punt returns for touchdowns this season. Stanford’s Glyn Milburn returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown in the Cardinal’s 19-7 victory over UCLA, and Oregon State’s Dwayne Owens returned a punt 97 yards for a touchdown in the Bruins’ 26-14 victory over the Beavers last week.

UCLA, which hadn’t allowed a kickoff to be returned for a touchdown since 1976, has also had problems covering kickoffs. Washington State’s Deron Pointer scored on a 98-yard kickoff return in the Cougars’ 30-17 victory over the Bruins.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Donnie Edwards has played well since moving into the starting lineup four games ago. Edwards has made 42 tackles, including three for losses, recorded three sacks and caused three fumbles. He has also recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass.
