HANOI : On the POW Trail
With its mandate scheduled to expire at year’s end, the U.S. Senate’s POW committee travels in Vietnam and Laos this week on its last overseas fact-finding trip.
Members will check on Vietnamese compliance with the recent agreement to make a full accounting of information available on POW/MIA cases. The visit also is intended to put extra pressure on Vietnam to resolve the 135 cases of U.S. servicemen known to have been captured alive but who were not returned to the United States or otherwise accounted for.
In addition to stops in Hanoi and Saigon, the group is to visit two remote areas, so far undesignated. Possibilities for those include aircraft crash sites or jungle locales where servicemen were once held and where there have been reports of live sightings.
