Long Beach Edges Past Tulsa in Tournament in Honolulu

HONOLULU — Chris Tower hit a layup with 11 seconds to go to give Cal State Long Beach its first lead of the game, and the 49ers held on to post a 72-69 victory over Tulsa in Friday night’s opening game of the Tip-Off Classic.
Host Hawaii met San Diego in the second game.
Lucious Harris scored 23 of his 30 points in the second half and Rod Hannibal added 13 over the final 20 minutes to lead Long Beach to its season-opening victory.
Tower’s layup gave the 49ers a 70-69 lead and Hannibal added a pair of free throws to close out the scoring.
The Golden Hurricane (2-1) used a 13-0 run in the first half en route to a 45-28 halftime lead. After opening a 49-28 lead one minute into the second half, Harris and Hannibal went to work with a 19-4 run.
Hannibal followed Harris in the scoring with 18 points. For Tulsa, Gary Collier had 14 and Jeff Malham 13.
