A City Heights boiler repairman was crushed to death early Tuesday aboard an ocean liner docked for repairs at the Embarcadero.
Luis Ruiz Jr., 41, was killed instantly when cables supporting a 1-ton boiler pipe snapped, causing the pipe to fall on him. Ruiz’s body was found in a crawl space underneath the ship’s auxiliary boiler, said Cal Vine, a county medical examiner’s investigator.
Ruiz, an employee of Fraser’s Boiler Service in Barrio Logan, was pronounced dead at 12:55 a.m., Vine said.
The accident took place on the Pacific Star, a cruise ship moored at the B Street Pier in the 1100 block of North Harbor Drive, said Thom Morris, a spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard.
Inspectors from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were expected to investigate the accident, federal officials said.
