Golden West figured to have a talented backcourt with Frances Oda and Erika Miller returning. But with the added solid play of freshman Iwamasa from Edison High School, the Rustlers now have one of the best guard combinations in Southern California.
Iwamasa earned her third consecutive all-tournament berth last weekend, when Golden West finished third in the Hancock tournament.
In the tournament, she averaged 20 points and six rebounds for the Rustlers, who are ranked sixth in the state.
Her best performance came in the third-place game, as Golden West beat No. 3 Ventura, 89-69. She had 28 points, six rebounds and five assists. She is averaging 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists this season.
Other top performers:
Cypress’ Yolanda Hearvey, who averaged 18 points and 13 rebounds in two games in the Pasadena tournament. She has led the Chargers in scoring and the last six games.
Amanda Valentino, who scored 23 points and had 13 rebounds in Saddleback’s 71-62 loss to Chaffey.
