Agents for first baseman Mark McGwire and outfielder Ruben Sierra said they were not close to contracts and will reject arbitration offers from the Oakland Athletics before Saturday’s deadline. This means if the A’s do not sign the players before Jan. 8, they will be prohibited from signing them until May 1, making their departure likely.
