ASUNCION, Paraguay — The government reported Friday the discharge of three generals, including former army commander Gen. Ramon Garcete, and six senior police officials being tried on corruption or torture charges.
Garcete and former infantry division chief Gen. Aladino Enciso are on trial for taking part in a car-smuggling ring, a presidential press office bulletin said.
Gen. Francisco Sanchez, the chief of police until last September, was accused of collecting the wages of about 300 nonexistent police officers. Discharged Inspector Carlos Molinas is being tried for the same crime.
Six other inspectors were charged with torturing political prisoners during the dictatorship of Gen. Alfredo Stroessner, who was ousted in a 1989 coup.
Two former inspectors already are serving 28-year prison terms for torture.
