WEST ADAMS : Paperwork Delays Tenants’ Arrival

The Cochran Villa, a 10-unit housing complex for low-income families that opened last month, is still awaiting occupants.

The complex, at 2921 Redondo Blvd., has tenants lined up but needs certificates from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“As soon as they’re ready, we’re in business,” said Vera Fleischman, director of development for the Los Angeles Family Housing Corp., the nonprofit agency that built the complex. “The tenants, most of whom were homeless, are really anxious to move in.”

Fleischman expects the paperwork will be completed sometime this month. Hundreds of applications were received to reside in the units.

The complex features four two-bedroom and six three-bedroom units with furniture, laundry facilities and a permanent children’s play area. It was funded by a $305,000 loan from the Community Redevelopment Agency, $539,147 from the state’s Rental Housing Construction Program and $237,300 from the Century Freeway Replacement Program.

The Los Angeles Family Housing Corp. provides emergency shelter, transitional and permanent housing for homeless people throughout the city. Its latest project was named in honor of the father of corporation chairman Johnnie L. Cochran Jr.
