Power Restored After Fire at Chevron Refinery

Crews restored power at the Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo on Sunday after a fire that shot flames 70 feet into the air, authorities said.
A transformer failure apparently caused the plant to lose power late Saturday night, sending a variety of petroleum products to several emergency burn-off stacks, Fire Capt. Jim O’Brien said.
“When they have a problem like that, rather than have it blow up in the plant they dump it off into the safety valves,” said Fire Capt. Mike Early. “It looks very spectacular but it’s all part of the safety procedures.”
About 30 firefighters responded to the fire shortly after 11 p.m., and had it under control in 30 minutes, said Early.
No injuries were reported.
