* Wai Szeto has been appointed vice president of corporate development for computer maker AST Research Inc. in Irvine.

Szeto, formerly vice president of engineering at AST, will focus on long-term strategic planning and new business opportunities. Scott Smith, a former IBM executive, will succeed Szeto as vice president of engineering. He will be responsible for day-to-day engineering and product development.

Both will report to Safi U. Qureshey, chief executive.
