Hourie Taylor, who has been acting police chief for eight months, has been named to head the Police Department.
After a nationwide search and months of testing and interviews, Taylor was named chief Dec. 30. He took over as acting chief April 29, the day rioting erupted in Compton after the verdicts in the Rodney King beating case.
Taylor took over for former Police Chief Terry Ebert, who was placed on administrative leave after an audit revealed that funds were missing from at least two Police Department accounts, including one for drug buys. Although another audit was completed last summer, city officials have refused to reveal the results, saying the matter is under investigation.
Ebert has since claimed stress disability and retired from the department.
