The Bible and Gay Rights

Contrary to popular civil religious sentiment, this nation’s Constitution was not framed “according to the truths and principles set forth by God in the Bible” (Platform, Jan. 7). It was founded on the idea of individual liberty, as expressed by English philosopher, John Locke. I fail to see any instances where God (or Jesus Christ) emphasizes individual rights as it has been emphasized by our Bill of Rights.
Instead, the teachings of Jesus command us to love our neighbor (anyone to whom we can show mercy) as we love ourselves. If we enjoy the rights to housing, employment and education, how can we deny anyone else these rights?
