PACOIMA : Council Overrides Development Veto

Overriding a veto by Mayor Tom Bradley, the Los Angeles City Council has allowed a developer to proceed with his plan to build a two-story, 62,000-square-foot industrial park facility on a 2.7-acre parcel in Pacoima.
By a unanimous vote, lawmakers backed a request Tuesday by Councilman Ernani Bernardi, who represents the area, to override the Bradley veto of a rezoning ordinance that had stymied the project by developer George Lanning.
Bradley had vetoed the rezoning, which will permit industrial development on property now designated for residential use.
Bradley had followed the advice of the city Planning Commission, which had said Lanning’s project would be an unwanted intrusion into a residential area.
Bernardi, however, had maintained that the property is next to an industrial park and that projects such as Lanning’s that create jobs should be encouraged by the city in Pacoima, an area of high unemployment. The property is at the southeast corner of Osborne Street and Norris Avenue.
