A New Image: The Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund will award $50 million in grants over the next five years to help art museums attract more diverse audiences. The program is said to represent the largest effort to date to help museums change their images as elitist institutions. The first round includes $1.5 million to the University Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive at UC Berkeley--the only California institution represented. In all, four independent museums, three university museums and a decorative arts collection in a historic mansion were named.
