Texan Conner Leads Newport Golf Event

NEWPORT BEACH — Frank Conner of San Antonio, Tex., shot a five-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead at the Taco Bell Newport Classic pro-am golf tournament Friday at Newport Beach Country Club.
Clark Dennis of Ft. Worth, who had a hole-in-one on the 143-yard fourth hole, and Ron Hinds of Westlake Village, are tied for second, one stroke behind Conner.
Conner teamed with Tom Deemer of Newport Beach to shoot a 63 in the better-ball format to lead the pro-am portion.
The $65,000 tournament concludes today.
