Clinton on Higher Taxes
A plea for sacrifice--a statement by Clinton as reported in The Times--apparently asking for the cooperation of the citizen to accept cuts in social programs.
I am sure many readers have seen reports in the news media encouraging a reduction in Social Security and Medicare. These reports are generally authored by “experts” for stock brokerage companies, economists for front organizations and presidential appointees. These proponents likely belong to lobbying groups bankrolling political campaigns or have vested interests.
For sincerity, let’s start at the top by cutting the high pension benefits of these elected officials (the President, senators, and congressmen) and then letting it trickle down to the poorer of our society. There is a difference. Cutting back on luxury demonstrates compassion. Cutting back on the basic needs for survival such as food, shelter, and medical care demonstrates selfishness and ruthlessness.
