World IN BRIEF : ANGOLA : 10,000 Troops Head for Huambo Battle

Two columns of about 10,000 Angolan troops headed for the battle-torn city of Huambo, where thousands have died in a decisive battle with the rebel movement UNITA, government officials said. Diplomats said government forces regained some lost ground in Huambo over the weekend after UNITA appeared on the verge of outright victory last week in Angola’s second-largest city. The struggle for Huambo, the biggest battle in nearly two decades of conflict, has become the centerpiece of Angola’s renewed civil war.
