YOU BET YOUR LIFE? Irvine police officers, unhappy with the city’s 3% pay boost offer--after none last year--are taking their case to the people. Their association is running a series of ads in the local weekly: “Pay Police--As if your life depends on it.” The officers say the ads only mean to call attention to the importance of what police officers do. . . . But counters Mayor Michael Ward: “Some people think the ads sound a little threatening.”
