GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Unseeded Capistrano Valley Christian Defeats No. 4 Team

Marcy Giosa scored 12 points and Ivana Kovacic added 11 to lead unseeded Capistrano Valley Christian to a 58-30 victory over host Encino Holy Martyrs, the fourth-seeded team, in the first round of the Division V-AA girls’ basketball playoffs Saturday.
The Eagles (18-6) advanced to play Redlands Arrowhead Christian, a 56-52 winner in overtime over Riverside Sherman Indian, in the Feb. 27 quarterfinals.
Aline Altibarmakian scored 22 points for Holy Martyrs (15-7).
In Division I-A second-round games:
Huntington Beach 79, Ontario 48--Deana Itow had 29 points and 11 assists for Huntington Beach, which advanced to play the Ventura Buena, a 58-49 winner over Arroyo Grande, in the quarterfinals. Clare Walker added 25 points and 13 rebounds for the Oilers (25-3).
Rasheeda Clark scored 15 points for Ontario (23-5).
Marina 70, Rancho Cucamonga 42--Shandy Robbins had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Aimee Periolat had 13 points, including three three-pointers, for host Marina (21-4). The Vikings, fourth-seeded in the division, advanced to play Chino, a 42-32 winner over Coachella Valley, in the quarterfinals.
Riverside Perris 71, San Clemente 57--Dana Netherby had 23 points and Michelle MacIntyre had 18 points for San Clemente (17-11). Maylana Martin had 19 points for Riverside Perris (26-0).
In Division II-A first-round games:
Kennedy 45, El Modena 36--Lynly Matsumoto scored 22 points and Karin Kitagawa added 14 for Kennedy (18-7), which took a nine-point, first-quarter lead. Jamie Shine led El Modena (10-11) with 18 points. Kennedy next will play Troy in the second round Wednesday.
Savanna 60, Santa Fe Springs Santa Fe 48--Sara Works had 25 points and 17 rebounds and Stacey Aliff added 20 points for visiting Savanna (13-12), which advanced to play Westlake, a 57-47 winner over Katella, in the second round Wednesday. Santa Fe (12-6) led 28-22 at halftime, but Savanna (13-12) outscored Santa Fe, 26-7 in the fourth quarter.
Troy 50, Magnolia 31--Junior forward Becky How scored 10 points for host Troy (21-4), the fourth-seeded team, which won its first league title since 1981. America Bonales had eight points for Magnolia (10-13).
In Division III--AA first-round games:
Cypress 48, Bellflower 36--Jessica Eggleston scored 29 points and Julie Adams grabbed 17 rebounds for Cypress (17-8), which will play Morningside in the quarterfinals. Christina McConnell scored 12 points for Bellflower (15-8).
El Dorado 58, Riverside Rubidoux 39--Sophomore center Shanna Renken had 15 points and 19 rebounds for El Dorado (22-2), which will play the Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World-South Torrance winner in the quarterfinals.
Jamie Sweet scored 14 points for El Dorado, which led Rubidoux, 28-22, at halftime. Rubidoux finished 11-15.
Estancia 36, Whittier Pioneer 27--Freshman Jessica Waltz had nine points and five assists to lead visiting Estancia (17-6), which advanced to play the Mission Hills Alemany, an 80-50 winner over Norwalk Glenn, in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Newport Harbor 63, Glendora St. Lucy’s 53--Michaela Ross had 28 points and 12 rebounds, including six in the fourth quarter to lead the host Sailors (19-6). Newport Harbor outscored St. Lucy’s in the fourth quarter, 17-6.
The Sailors advanced to the quarterfinals to play La Puente Bassett, a 48-47 winner over Torrance Bishop Montgomery. Stacey Nuveman had 24 points for St. Lucy’s (14-12).
Inglewood Morningside 85, Western 47--Western’s Kwanzaa Gibson scored a team-high 17 points, but top-seeded Morningside (23-2) was too much in the game at Inglewood.
Western finished 14-12.
Tina Thompson, who will be playing at USC next year, had 25 points and 18 rebounds for Morningside.
In Division IV-A first-round games:
Santa Monica Crossroads 39, Whittier Christian 37--Alana Kempton had 14 points for Whittier Christian (15-9). Sherrise Irving had 16 points to lead Crossroads (18-4).
Sun Valley Village Christian 49, Orange Lutheran 47--Kristen Weddick scored 18 points and Michelle Hines added 11 for visiting Orange Lutheran (13-12).
