From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Helicopters lifted 387 workers from a North Sea gas rig’s floating housing unit after it was cut adrift because of fears that high seas would drive it into the rig. The unit, with 497 people aboard, was cut loose from the Amoco gas production rig Lomond, 120 miles east of Aberdeen, Scotland. First plans to airlift personnel off the huge vessel were canceled because of the danger of flying in 70 m.p.h. winds, but when the winds abated to 55 m.p.h. the copters began relays to evacuate nonessential workers.
