From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Inmates at the county jail in New Bedford, Mass., apparently angry over a search of cells, went on a rampage, setting a fire that nearly destroyed the 165-year-old facility. At least nine people were hurt, including one inmate and seven law officers, none seriously, officials said. The melee began about noon and lasted about two hours before police in riot gear regained control. Inmates were seen leaning out of broken windows on the building’s third floor, chanting, “We want our rights!”
