LAGUNA BEACH : Board Pessimistic on School Budget

After cutting almost $8 million from the budget last summer, the Capistrano Unified School District could face another $6.5-million shortfall in its $122-million budget in the next fiscal year.
“The situation looks very, very bleak, and bleak is probably a mild way to put it,” board President Marlene Draper said.
Although the governor’s proposed budget would keep base student funding the same for school districts, funding for such services as special education will not keep up with local growth, Supt. James A. Fleming said Monday in a report to the board.
The district will also need to spend more than $2.7 million just to open Aliso Niguel High School and Aliso Viejo Middle School, he said.
Fleming stressed that the shortfall figure is preliminary, and many revisions are expected as work continues on the 1993-94 district budget.
