Craig Cotter, a special education teacher at Five Acres therapeutic treatment center for abused children in Altadena, has been selected one of five national winners of the Child Welfare Worker of the Year award by the Child Welfare League of America.
Cotter, 32, has been at Five Acres for seven years. He was trained as a high school English teacher and studies special education at Cal State Northridge.
Among his activities at Five Acres is development of a junior high school curriculum for children with learning disabilities and severe emotional disturbances. He has also developed stress reduction, physical education and health management programs for the students.
Five Acres is a therapeutic treatment center for abused and neglected children. It offers a residential treatment program, foster care and emergency shelter.
The Child Welfare League is a federation of 700 voluntary and public agencies that serve abused and neglected children and their families.
