Computed Cost-Cutting: New York’s IBM Gallery of Science and Art, an 11,000-square-foot showcase for major traveling exhibitions, will close at the end of the year because of corporate cost-cutting. Richard Berglund, IBM’s director of cultural programs, would not divulge the program’s annual budget, nor how much closing the gallery would save the company, but said, “We considered a lot of things, including charging admission, but we decided this was what we needed to do as part of the company’s drive to be profitable.” The Madison Avenue gallery, open since 1983, is currently showing “Free Within Ourselves: African-American Art From the National Museum of American Art.”
