LONG BEACH AREA — Boys’ high school basketball in the South Coast area was dominated this season by quick, sharpshooting guards. Eight of the 10 players on The Times’ 1993 South Coast Boys High School All-Star Basketball Team spent at least some time in the backcourt.
One of them, senior Everett Ratleff of Jordan, had a flair for the dramatic. The 6-foot-1 senior won games at the final buzzer three times, including the Southern Section Division I title game when his jump shot beat Simi Valley, 61-59.
Jordan is one of three repeaters on the all-star team. The other two are guards Rodney Malloy of Lynwood and Peter Sverkos of Wilson.
The team, from schools in Long Beach, Lakewood, Lynwood, Compton and portions of Bellflower and Paramount, was chosen primarily on the basis of ballots cast by area coaches. The players will be honored during a breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Sheraton Hotel in Long Beach.
The South Coast team:
EVERETT RATLEFF, Jordan--He averaged 20.3 points a game and was a first-team Division I choice. “An excellent shooting guard,” said Wilson Coach Quentin Brown. He signed early to play with Cal State Long Beach, the school where his uncle, Ed Ratleff, starred in the early 1970s.
RODNEY MALLOY, Lynwood--The 6-3 1/2 guard averaged 18 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He was voted to the Southern Section Division I first team and to the all-San Gabriel Valley League team for the third consecutive year. “A real player,” Paramount Coach Dave Ek said.
PETER SVERKOS, Wilson--The 6-3 senior guard, who averaged 16.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists, was a solid point-getter among coaches. He received all-Moore League honors for the second year in a row and was chosen to the second team in the Southern Section’s Division I. “A good shooter and playmaker,” said Coach Bill Lee of Lynwood.
CHRIS BOYD, Paramount--A 6-4 guard at a school with a reputation for overachieving in basketball, Boyd averaged 20 points, 16.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists. The co-MVP of the San Gabriel Valley League was also a first-team, all-Southern Section Division I choice. He will play at Southern Methodist.
NICK HOLT, Millikan--The 6-1 guard, who was difficult to stop near the basket, averaged 15.9 points and 3.2 assists. An all-Moore League choice, he is considering San Diego State. “An exceptional scorer,” Wilson’s Brown said of Holt.
ZERRICK CAMPBELL, Poly--The all-Moore League and Division I second-team choice led the Jackrabbits in scoring with a 16-point average and in rebounding with a 9.5 average. The 6-5 junior forward/center also averaged three assists. He is expected to be a Division I prospect next season.
JACOBI THOMPSON, Compton--One of the top vote-getters from the coaches, the all-Moore League choice led the Tarbabes in scoring and rebounding as a 6-4 power forward. A senior, he transferred to Compton last summer from Pius X, where he made The Times’ all-Southeast team as a junior. He will play at Santa Clara University.
JAMIE GILLIN, Dominguez--A quick 6-5 junior, Gillin scored 30 points in the Southern Section II-AA championship game that the Dons lost to J.W. North, 75-72. Specializing in three-point baskets, he averaged 16.5 points and made the Division II first team.
CHRIS BLANTON, Dominguez--He dominated the post with his 6-6 frame and shared the most valuable player award with Boyd in the San Gabriel Valley League. The senior forward averaged 17 points. “A very solid player,” said Lynwood’s Lee.
RICK PRICE, St. Anthony--A 6-5 junior point guard, Price averaged 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Saints and figures to be one of the top recruits on the West Coast next season. He has had five coaches in three years at St. Anthony, and it remains to be seen if he will return to the school for his senior year. “It’s been constant turmoil for me,” said Price, who lives in Carson.
