BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Davis Close to the Situation

Angel designated hitter Chili Davis, a graduate of Dorsey High, was worried perhaps more than any player about Saturday’s King verdicts. Not only does his family live in Los Angeles, but his brother is an LAPD officer.
“There are some good police officers and some bad ones,” Davis said. “Just because they’re police officers doesn’t mean they’re there to protect and serve . . . for some it’s a sense of power. There have been incidents where I have been stopped, and there have been five to seven police cars out there.
“I’m not defending Rodney King, but they didn’t have to beat him to a pulp. Just like it was senseless to beat up the truck driver (Reginald Denny). That person might have done more for black people than anyone on earth, but we don’t know that.”
Torey Lovullo and Rene Gonzales stood on the field before the game, posing for pictures with talk-show host Larry King.
“I think the guy’s the greatest,” Lovullo said.
The Angels sent pitcher Scott Lewis to double-A Midland, Tex., to make a start Monday at Wichita before returning to the Angels. Lewis has been on the disabled list all season because of a bruised right elbow and is expected to make his season debut Saturday against the Boston Red Sox at Anaheim Stadium. . . . Chad Curtis’ four stolen bases tied a record for the most steals against the Orioles, joining Rickey Henderson of Oakland and Dave Collins of Toronto.
