Harvard-Westlake Pole Vaulter Stern to Attend Yale

Jesse Stern of Harvard-Westlake High, who finished fourth in the pole vault in last year’s state track and field championships, will attend Yale in the fall.
Stern, the two-time defending Southern Section 1-A Division champion, chose Yale over Pennsylvania and Brown. Ivy League schools do not give out athletic scholarships.
“I had a nice recruiting trip there and I liked the people,” Stern said. “The track program was good enough for me, although the quality of the track program was not a big factor in my decision.”
Stern raised his personal best to 16 feet 1 inch Tuesday in a Mission League meet against visiting Bishop Montgomery. The mark moves him to fifth on the all-time region list.
