ORANGE COUNTY ALL-STAR SOCCER : North Boys, South Girls Are Winners

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Esperanza’s Greg Massey scored an early goal, and Foothill goalkeeper Jason Vlcek held off the South the rest of the way to preserve a 1-0 North victory in the Orange County North-South All-Star boys’ soccer game Saturday night at Chapman University

El Toro’s Sherri Kaminski scored on a penalty kick with three minutes to go to give the South girls a 2-1 victory over the North earlier at Chapman.

Massey intercepted a bad pass at midfield and scored his unassisted goal on a breakaway with 37:45 left in the first half.

That it was the game’s only goal was thanks mainly to Vlcek, who was inserted with 21:10 left in the first half when starting North goalkeeper Matt Reis suffered a bloody nose while covering up the ball on a one-on-one South scoring attempt. Vlcek had a game-high eight saves, seven in the second half.

He was named co-most valuable player with Capistrano Valley’s Kyle Berger of the South.

“We were lucky we had (Vlcek),” said North Coach Curt Bauer of Santa Margarita. “He’s a great goalkeeper and saved the game for us.”

El Toro supplied the offense for the South girls. Forward Yvonne Daulton of the Chargers gave the South a 1-0 first-half lead, but the North rallied in the second half and tied it when Kennedy’s Lori Van Herk scored with 22 minutes left.

Kaminski lined up for a penalty kick after a handball call against the North. She swerved and made the goal for the victory.
