Arcadia : Budget Avoids School Cuts

Following voter approval last week of a $28-million bond measure to renovate school buildings, Arcadia Unified School District officials had some good news for students and parents.
A preliminary district budget for the next school year presented to the Board of Education on Monday shows no need for cuts in staff or services.
“We’re basically in the position of not having to make further reductions,” said C. Earl Davis, assistant superintendent for business services.
The $33-million budget is based on the assumption the district will receive the same amount from the state as last year for each of its 8,266 students, and that sufficient reductions were made to last year’s budget to avoid cuts, Davis said.
“It’s tough times, but we’re not in the position of having to lay off people,” Davis said. The district laid off 10 employees last year.
Salaries and benefits, which make up 85% of the district spending plan, will increase only slightly, Davis said.
