Sites Determined for City Baseball Semifinals

Sites have been determined for next week’s all-Valley final four in the City Section 4-A Division baseball semifinals.

Top-seeded El Camino Real (22-2) will face third-seeded Monroe (20-4) at Birmingham High, and Taft (19-8) will face Chatsworth (21-7) at Pierce College. Both games are Tuesday at 3 p.m.

The final is set for Dodger Stadium on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Behind right-hander Joel Zamudio, Monroe defeated El Camino Real, 7-2, in a tournament game March 9.

Chatsworth and Taft--rivals in the West Valley League--have played four times, with Chatsworth winning three.

Miscellany

Valley College will offer an eight-week course on sports broadcasting for men and women beginning June 12. The class will meet Saturdays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and be taught by Lou Riggs.

Softball

Verdugo Hills High will try to win its first City Section softball championship on Thursday. The Dons (12-5), who finished second in the Northeast League, will face South Gate in the 2:45 p.m. final at UCLA’s Sunset Field.

To get to the final, Verdugo Hills upset two-time defending champion Roosevelt.

Top-seeded Simi Valley (24-1-1) will travel to Golden West College for its Southern Section semifinal game against Ocean View in Division I.

Camarillo (23-6), which finished second in the Marmonte League to Simi Valley, will be at home against Los Alamitos in the lower bracket.

La Reina (25-5) will travel to Temecula Valley High to face Murrieta in the Division V semifinals. All Southern Section games start at 3:15 p.m.

Volleyball

Cal State Northridge middle blocker Coley Kyman, a 6-foot-6 senior, has been named first-team All-American by Asics and Volleyball Monthly.

Setter Ken Lynch, a 6-5 senior, was a third-team selection. Axel Hager, a 6-8 senior, received honorable-mention honors.

Kyman also was named a first-team All-American by Asics and Volleyball Monthly last year.
