Retraining Extended for Ex-GM Workers

The Los Angeles Community College District has granted $15,525 to extend by more than two months a Valley College project to retrain displaced workers from the General Motors plant in Van Nuys.
Wednesday’s decision will continue the job retraining services for the several hundred workers who have participated in the General Motors’ Displaced Worker Project since the auto assembly plant closed its doors to 2,600 workers last August.
“It’s extremely important,” Valley College academic vice president Sam Mayo said of the board of trustees’ decision to extend the services past July 7 to Sept. 14. “I feel these people have suffered a great deal.”
The project allows Valley College counselor Yvette Cruzalegui to meet at the now-defunct plant with former GM employees to help them get retrained or educated for other types of work, Mayo said.
Valley College was selected for this project because of its geographic proximity to the Van Nuys plant.
