Gilman, 13, Leads Area Swimmers in Meet of Champions

Rebecca Gilman led a contingent of Valley-area distance swimmers Thursday in the Swim Meet of Champions at the Mission Viejo International Swimming complex.
Gilman, from the Buenaventura Swim Team, placed eighth in the 800-meter freestyle in 9 minutes 20.73 seconds. The race was won by four-time Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans in 8:37.79. Gilman was one of only two 13-year-olds who qualified for the event.
In the men’s 800 freestyle, Michael Carroll, 19, of Buenaventura finished 16th in 8:48.52. The winner was Sergey Mariniuk, a native of the Republic of Moldova, who touched in 8:19.29.
Ben Swartout, a Buenaventura swimmer who recently completed his freshman year at Harvard, placed 26th in 8:59.10.
Matthew Prezzano of Conejo-Simi Aquatics was 31st in 9:04.95 and Percy Calkins, 21, of Conejo-Simi finished 40th with a time of 9:23.12.
The meet continues today with preliminaries at 9 a.m. Finals start at 5 p.m.
The 100 freestyle, 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke, 400 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay will be contested.
