HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON IN INDIA Photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson, introduction by Satyajit Ray (Thames & Hudson: $24.95; 128 pp.). These exceptional photographs were taken during the late ‘40s--the time of the Partition--and the calmer era of the mid-60s. The most striking images reflect Cartier-Bresson’s fascination with the contrast between the ancient grandeur of India and the minutiae of daily life revealed in the movements of women drying clothes, a boy hugging his fisherman-father or a bedizened Maharani examining her reflection.
