HUNTINGTON PARK : Council to Weigh Landscape Fee Hike

The City Council has scheduled a public hearing Monday on a proposed increase in assessment fees to pay for maintaining and improving irrigation, landscaping and lighting in the city.
City officials hope to raise $147,000 through a rate hike that will cover the cost of purchasing and maintaining lights, trees and shrubbery for streets and parks as well as for special projects such as park restrooms.
If the levy increase is approved, residential property owners will pay about 14% more, or an average of $19 more, next year. The average owner of a home on a 50-foot-wide lot will pay about $151.77 in fees, according to an engineer’s report.
Commercial or industrial property owners will pay an increase of about 7%, or about 18 cents more per foot of street frontage, and property owners in the central business district will pay about 2% more, or an average increase of 15 cents per foot.
The fees are based on how much the property owner benefits from city landscape and lighting, said Patrick Fu, assistant city engineer. For example, residential areas are likely to have more street lights than industrial areas, and this is reflected in a higher assessment.
The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. City Hall is at 6550 Miles Ave.
